“Vaginal stenosis has stopped me having sex. What can I do?”
Cancer nurse Beth says...
Vaginal stenosis is caused by scar tissue and is where the vagina becomes narrower and shorter. The lining of the vagina may also be thinner, drier or contain scar tissue. It can be caused by radiation to the pelvis and some types of surgery. If you have had radiation treatment your treating team should talk to you and explain what you can do to help and provide you with vaginal dilators. If you are still struggling ask to speak to your specialist nurse who will be able to help and advise you. Using your dilator after a warm bath and a few pelvic floor exercises helps the muscles relax and makes it easier to insert. You can also try using a mirror and propping your back up.
Sex toy expert Renee says...
Vaginal dilation aims to gently stretch the vaginal walls over time. The Sh! Dilators are handmade, firm yet flexible, and bend to the vagina’s natural curves. They are softly tapered for easier insertion and more comfortable use. A removable bullet adds vibration for added pleasure and relaxation. Using a water-based lube with the dilators will enhance glide and sensuality and ease insertion. We are conditioned to think of sex as penis-in vagina, but actually, it’s so much more. It’s kissing, and touching, and caressing and playing in all manner of ways. You can still experience immense pleasure without anything going inside.
